KENNETH BRANAGH’S HAMLET

While studying, I had the opportunity to work with Snow Business, the specialist company responsible for creating the snow effects for Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Hamlet. It was an early glimpse behind the scenes of a major film production and one that has stayed with me ever since.

The scale of the snow effects was extraordinary. The production used around 200 tons of artificial snow, with Snow Business covering huge areas of the Oxfordshire countryside. At the time, the film was described as using more artificial snow than any feature film before it, even Dr Zhivago. Snow Business has also subsequently described the Hamlet production as its record for the largest area covered with snow, at around 40 hectares.

I was fortunate enough to witness the filming of the very first act in person....peering from behind the camera, I intently watched Jack Lemmon  playing Marcellus, one of the guards on watch. The scene begins with the uneasy exchange between the guards as they question one another in the darkness. They are already on edge because they have seen the ghost of Hamlet’s dead father appearing on previous nights.

As the scene develops, Horatio joins the guards. Unlike Marcellus and Bernardo, he is initially sceptical about what they have been seeing. Their conversation gradually builds a sense of tension and uncertainty, until the ghost appears before them. The actors have to convey that growing apprehension largely through their interaction, pauses and reactions, rather than through anything particularly dramatic happening at first.

Seeing first-hand the scale and detail involved in creating the winter landscape. For a student, it was a remarkable opportunity to witness a major film production from behind the scenes and a memorable experience that has stayed with me throughout my own career in production and live events.

DELL TECHNOLOGIES FORUM

I’ve been involved with the Dell Technologies Forum since 2021, working across multiple editions of the event as both a Camera Operator and PTZ Operator. Over the years, I’ve become familiar with the pace, scale and technical demands of the production, working as part of the wider camera team to capture keynotes, presentations, interviews and panel discussions.

Working across both conventional camera and remotely operated PTZ systems has allowed me to take on a flexible role within the production team, adapting to different venues, stage layouts and programme requirements. It’s been a great opportunity to work alongside the same experienced production teams year after year, delivering reliable, broadcast-quality coverage for one of Dell Technologies’ major annual events.

During the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow, I worked closely with Boeing's press office, supporting the delivery of media coverage from one of the aerospace industry's most significant global events. My role involved capturing high-quality still images and working alongside Boeing's communications team to document key flying displays, aircraft announcements, executive engagements, and media activities. Operating in a fast-paced environment, I ensured imagery was produced to tight deadlines for use across press releases, news outlets, and Boeing's digital and social media channels.

Working in coordination with the press office required careful planning, excellent timing, and an understanding of both aviation operations and media requirements to capture impactful moments that showcased the scale, innovation, and excitement of the Farnborough Airshow.

Arrive

Every event has its own rhythm, energy and character. I take time to understand the environment, the people and what matters to the client before the action begins. Being present from the outset means I can anticipate the moments that others might overlook.

Observe

Good event photography is as much about awareness as it is about the camera. I watch how people interact, how a room responds and where the story is developing. Rather than simply documenting what happens, I look for the expressions, connections and details that give the event its personality.

ANTICIPATE → CAPTURE →

The strongest images often happen in a fraction of a second. I position myself to be ready for those moments, working unobtrusively so the experience remains natural while still creating purposeful, engaging photographs. From the key moments to the unexpected ones, the aim is to create a collection that tells the story of the event — with images delivered efficiently and ready to be used.

Deliver → Wrap

Once the event is underway, the job is about more than taking photographs. It’s about making sure the right images are captured, selected and delivered when they are needed. Whether that means a carefully edited collection after the event or photographs turned around during the day, I finish with the same attention to detail that I brought at the start.

At the end of 2025, FW and Encore asked me back to provide photo coverage for the annual Forvis Mazars CARL Conference in Berlin. With more than 1,500 people attending over three days, the brief covered keynotes, panel discussions, awards and a spectacular gala dinner — capturing both the energy on stage and the conversations between delegates.

Returning to an event I have covered across two decades is rare, and that familiarity makes a difference: knowing the rhythm of the programme, the venue and the client's needs means the right moments are anticipated rather than chased, and imagery is delivered consistently across every day of the conference.

From inspiring keynote sessions and sit-down interviews featuring leaders from Hilton, Adidas, The New York Times and Timpson Group, to sponsor activations, interactive breakouts, networking and evening entertainment, the brief called for a combination of polished event coverage and authentic, candid moments.

With images required for marketing and social media throughout the day, speed of delivery was just as important as the photography itself. Working alongside an onsite editor enabled photographs to be quickly reviewed, edited and delivered, keeping the client’s content flowing while the event was still in progress.

A busy event, a fast turnaround and photography delivered when it mattered.

After lockdown and two years of what felt like hibernation, it was great to be back in central London amongst the buzz of city life.

Our friends at Fletcher Wilson asked us to provide event photography for an activation in Covent Garden, showcasing Hydrow’s new rowing equipment and technology.

We delivered a range of images to set deadlines throughout the day — interior and exterior, and members of the public enjoying their rowing experience. We even spent some time with British track and field athlete Perri Drayton.

Interviews conducted in Kenya, Uganda and India illustrate the outcomes of five contrasting strands of research.

Behind the Market was published by the Crop Post-Harvest Programme (CPHP), funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), and produced with the Natural Resources Institute at the University of Greenwich. Written and edited by Georgina Smith, it follows research out of the laboratory and into the hands of farmers, traders, processors and policy makers.

The fieldwork took me from maize stores and farmer workshops in Uganda, to transport routes in Kenya, to sorghum fields in Andhra Pradesh and the forest communities of Orissa — portraits, working moments and landscapes that carry each story.

A Gift for Ian

Ian Redmond smiling beside a framed print of himself speaking on stage at Rebalance Earth

Ian Redmond OBE with his framed print

Ian Redmond OBE is one of the world's pioneering conservationists — known for his work with mountain gorillas and elephants, more than 50 documentaries alongside Sir David Attenborough and Sigourney Weaver, and as a founder of the Ape Alliance.

To mark his 70th birthday, the Rebalance Earth team chose one of my photographs as their gift: a framed print of Ian on stage at their Natural Capital Conference at IET London, Savoy Place — captured mid-talk, holding up an elephant dung ball to the audience.

It's always a pleasure to be asked back by a client to provide video and photography services. Even after 25 years I'm always pleasantly surprised and feel a sense of achievement. I guess I must be doing something right?! Well after two days, I certainly put in my 10,000 steps at the 2024 World Hydrogen Summit and Exhibition in Rotterdam (my third year). The largest and most senior global hydrogen event in the world. I'm always astonished by the level of innovation, so it's great to see it up and personal. This year I was testing my small but mighty Blackmagic 6k pro with Nikon 70-200 lens and Blackmagic 4K G2 with Meke 16mm lens combo. It's ideal for traveling to events, as both cameras and accessories fit nicely into a Peli 1510 case. I supply each camera with a Scandisk 1/2tb 2000mbs sd drive, so I can capture all resolutions including 6k. Each kit also comes with a M1 Macbook pro and 2 x 5tb usbc drive for quick DIT and transfer. My trusty 2 x Nikon D800's also allowed me to capture an array of signage, stands, sponsorship areas, presentations and stages. Delivering almost 900 images from day one's Summit and Exhibition. Every once in a while I get some free time after an event to explore the city where I am working. I've spent many hundreds of hours purposely getting lost amongst back streets, looking for the fascinating mix of old and new that ultimately makes each city's vista unique. The streets of Lisbon are lined with colorful buildings adorned with traditional azulejo tiles. These tiles offer a striking contrast to the blue skies and the cobblestone streets. The city's architecture ranges from Gothic to Baroque to modern. It's a city of contrasts, with many unique neighborhoods to explore, from the winding streets of Alfama to the colorful facades of the Bairro Alto. If you are lucky enough to find yourself there, here are a few tips to help you capture Lisbon's essence with your camera: 1. Take your time to walk around and observe the people, architecture, and street art. 2. Look for interesting angles. Instead of just taking straight-on shots of buildings and landmarks, try experimenting with different angles and perspectives. For example, you could take a photo from a low angle looking up at a historic building or from a high angle looking down on a street scene. 3. Capture the colors. Lisbon is a city of bright colors, from pastel-hued buildings to vibrant street art. Be sure to capture these colors in your photographs and don't be afraid to play with saturation and contrast to make them pop. 4. Take advantage of the light. Lisbon is famous for its beautiful light, which changes throughout the day. 5. Include people in your photos. Lisbon is a lively city, full of people going about their daily lives. Including people in your photos can help to capture the energy and vibrancy of the city. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy your time in Lisbon. Don't worry too much about getting the perfect shot – sometimes the best photos are the ones that capture a moment or a feeling. I would love to hear from you if you have an Event, PR, Activation, Incentive or special project coming up that requires photography or video. All photos by me. A very Happy New Year to everyone. The last quarter of 2023 was certainly one of my busiest with 14 countries and 30+ flights. I finished the year on a high in the very cold city of Montreal, Canada. Taking your gloves off in sub-zero temperatures is not recommended, but I was excited to hit the streets and explore a city of contrasts. Now in my 12th year (i've lost count) I was asked to provide event photography for Mazars annual conference. 1000+ delegates over 3 days. I was also responsible for running a headshot studio for delegates to update their photos. For Event managers and Producers. 'Behind the Market,' was a special project I was involved in 2005. I was part of a small team for 'The Crop Post Harvest Project,' which documented five strands of research with farmers conducted in Kenya, Uganda and India. It is an experience I will never forget and I will always remember the people I meet in the field who were dealing with the harsh realities of poverty and learning to embrace science for the better. I learned that changes in attitudes, skills/knowledge and most importantly relationships, within individuals and organisations, may be the first signs that research is having an impact on poverty.
